Three people have been confirmed d+ead, while four others sustained severe injuries after a multi-storey shopping complex collapsed in Owode-Ede, Ede North Local Government Area of Osun State.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 11 pm on Friday, trapping seven artisans working at the construction site beneath the rubble.
The victims were said to be apprentice tilers who had travelled from Ejigbo, Osun State, to work on the building before the collapse.
Sources at the scene disclosed that the artisans had worked late into the night and decided to sleep at the construction site, intending to resume work on Saturday morning. They reportedly became trapped when the structure suddenly gave way, while their supervisor was said to have been absent at the time.
According to sources, the building was already in poor condition before it collapsed, raising concerns about its structural integrity.
The structure was reportedly a shopping complex comprising 12 shops on the second and third floors, with two additional stores in the basement.
Sources also alleged that the construction was carried out without proper engineering supervision, claiming that the building owner personally oversaw the project and purchased the materials used.
A video from the scene showed the structure reduced to rubble, with debris scattered across the site as emergency responders carried out rescue operations.
Officers of the Federal Fire Service and other emergency personnel were sighted at the scene, working to rescue those trapped and attend to the injured.
Three victims were confirmed d+ead, while the four survivors sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The cause of the collapse had yet to be independently established as of the time of filing this report. Authorities had also not issued an official statement, while further details about the victims' identities and the condition of the injured remained unclear.
